A primary school in Jinping County, Yunnan Province in southwest China has received a donation of $721,300 from the Government of Equatorial Guinea to fund its renovation.
The donation was coordinated by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has ensured that the ‘China-Equatorial Guinea Friendship Primary School’, as the school is dubbed, can provide quality education facilities for young learners from 16 of China’s ethnic minority groups in the county.
The school, originally built in 2016, has been held up as an important symbol of bilateral friendship. It was during the April 2015 visit of Equatorial Guinean President Teodoro Obiang Nguema that the nation’s government announced it would donate a total of 4.9 million yuan to contribute towards the building of this school.
Equatorial Guinea is no stranger to donating to China. During the early days of the Covid-19 outbreak, the country’s government donated $2 million dollars in solidarity. As an explanation for the gesture, Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima, Minister of Mines and Hydrocarbons said: “China has always been a very strong and loyal supporter of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea and this contribution is a demonstration that Equatorial Guinea stands in solidarity with China and its people as it fights a global outbreak that has already cost too many lives.”
